Protests in Syria have escalated into what some are calling a buregoning civil war, and the United Nations says more than 9,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March last year. The government blames terrorists and "armed gangs" for the unrest and says more than 2,000 members of its security forces have been killed.

Twitter has been abuzz with reports of violence in central Damascus as well as the poisoning of high-ranking officials, including President Assad's brother-in-law.

It appears that the reports are false.

Activist Alexander Page wrote this regarding the claims:

"Riad Al Asaad the FSA commander based in Turkey has given me a direct quote, that the only genuine news here is the clashes that took place in the Kafarsooseh area and that 2 explosions were heard during the process where FSA elements clashed with regime forces in the fields between that area near Mezzeh."

The Local Coordination Committees are reporting powerful explosions in Shaalan, a neighbourhood in the heart of Damascus, and intense gunfire in the upscale neighbourhoods of Abu Roumaneh and Malki. The activist network also reports clashes between the Free Syrian Army and government troops in the dirstrict of Kafr Souseh.

Al Jazeera cannot confirm the reports.

The Syrian government has reportedly sentenced a citizen journalist to death after he gave a series of interviews to Al-Jazeera. Mohammed Abdelmawla al-Hariri was found guilty of "high treason and contacts with foreign parties".

He was arrested in April soon after speaking to Al Jazeera about the situation in Deraa.  Reporters Without Borders says it is shocked to learn of the sentence and that the verdict is unacceptable.

A car bomb that rocked the eastern Syrian city of Deir az-Zor on Saturday killed nine people and wounded about 100, the official SANA news agency said.

It said the bombing was carried out by a suicide bomber and that the dead included guards at a military installation which is near a housing complex. Al Jazeera is unable to independently verify reports of violence, as the Syrian government has placed strict restrictions on reporting.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Major General Robert Mood, head of the UN observers' mission in Syria, said he was satisfied with what the observers have achieved on the ground to reduce the course of violence.

However, he acknowledged the existence of difficulties facing the work of his mission.

Here are some excerpts from the interview with Al Jazeera:

"Cessation of violence depends largely on the commitment of the parties concerned on the ground inside and outside Syria." "We are happy to see a state of calm on the ground in Aleppo though we have faced difficulties because of violations coming from here or there."

"Violence is still ongoing and this is a challenge to the mission to carry out  its task."

"The more number of observers we have, the more opportunities we will have to end violence."

"It [having more observers] is genuine opportunity to be given to the mission … and support in this regard should be offered from both inside and outside players."   [Mood looks on during his arrival to Damascus airport on April 29 - Photo: Reuters]
